Kermit the Frog explains to the viewers that he put something in a "mystery box," and that whoever guesses from the clues Kermit gives what is in the box can keep what is in the box. Cookie Monster suddenly pops up and guesses it's a cookie. Kermit tells him it's not, and Cookie immediately decides to leave. Kermit attempts to coax Cookie to stay and partake in the game, initially to no avail. ("No cookie, no guessing game from clues. Arrivederci, frog.") However, Kermit sweetens the deal by telling Cookie that if he can guess correctly, he will be rewarded with a cookie.

Now hooked in, Cookie immediately bombards Kermit with a series of wild guesses ("Well, me wild about cookies!"), but Kermit calms him down and gives him his first proper clue: it is something to eat. Naturally, Cookie guesses it's a cookie, to which Kermit reminds him that it's not. The second clue: the mystery item is something round. Cookie once again guesses it's a cookie, to Kermit's increasing chagrin ("Just thought it might be cookie off chance," the monster explains). The third clue: the item is something orange. Cookie puts the three clues together and guesses that... it's a cookie! Kermit flippantly yells that the item is not a cookie!

Cookie tries again, only to immediately give up. Dumbfounded and irritated that Cookie is giving up so easily, a now furious Kermit hollers that the mystery item is an orange. Mistaking this for a fourth clue, Cookie "guesses" the correct answer and expects the cookie, but Kermit tells him he is not getting the cookie, as he didn't get the answer right until Kermit told him what it was.

Cookie responds with a passionate soliloquy about friendship, wherein he attempts to flatter his "very handsome frog" friend, then begins to imply that his and Kermit's friendship means nothing to Kermit since he won't reward Cookie for attempting the "silly guessing game." Giving in, Kermit gives Cookie his treat. An indignant Cookie questions receiving only one cookie ("Speech like that deserve at least five cookies!") to which Kermit replies that he only has one. "Okay," Cookie concedes, "in that case, me settle," and the monster devours his prize.
