PERFORMER | Fran Brill |
DEBUT | 1984 |
Mary and her little lamb of the famous nursery rhyme have made several notable appearances on Sesame Street.
As performed by Fran Brill, the character normally speaks with a Scottish accent. She refers to her companion as "Lamby," a recurring pet name despite the fact that she has actually cycled through different lambs over the years. Named lambs have included Felix, Sam, and Cordelia (a black lamb). On occasion, her lamb has been substituted with a clam or a jam.
Mary and her lamb were contestants on Elmo's Sing-Along Guessing Game, where it is revealed they live in Nursery Rhyme, South Dakota.
Brill's interpretation of Mary has been featured in street scenes for Episodes 2646, 2713, 2930, 3017, 3073, 3326, 4020, 4093, 4117, and 4521. She has also appeared in the home video Kids' Favorite Songs 2 and a 2015 web video about nursery rhymes. (YouTube)
She is often a Lavender Anything Muppet, though her design has varied and she has sometimes appeared as a Large Lavender Live Hand AM.
This particular iteration of the character appeared in the "Nursery Rhymes" episode of The Sesame Street Podcast with Foley & Friends, voiced now by Jennifer Barnhart.
Other versions[]
- In Episode 2480, Mary is a Hot Pink AM with yellow pigtailed hair (performed by Camille Bonora). The illustrations in William F. Lamby's book depict her with a generic human design with black hair. Lamby notes that this predates Mary dyeing her hair.
- In Episode 4110, Mary (Amanda Maddock) shows off her lamb's animal impressions at Storybook Community School.
- Non-Sesame Muppet versions of Mary and her lamb appear in a Disney Xtreme Digital video, falling on top of The Newsman during a Muppet News Flash.
