Wright was part of the ensemble casts of the Broadway musicals A History of the American Film (1978, with Brent Spiner) and Tintypes (1980, with Lynne Thigpen), earning a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Featured Actress for the latter. During this period, she appeared in the films Starting Over (with Candice Bergen and Charles Durning) and Heaven's Gate (with Kris Kristofferson and John Hurt). She was in the 1987 revival of The Front Page (with John Lithgow and Bill McCutcheon) and the New York-shot films The Secret of My Success (with Michael J. Fox) and Awakenings (with Robert DeNiro and Robin Williams).
She spent most of the late eighties and early nineties in Hollywood, appearing in the film Heart Condition (with Denzel Washington) and had guest turns on the TV series Empty Nest, Murphy Brown, the pilot of Picket Fences, and One for the Boys (with Maria Conchita Alonso). Back in New York, she returned to Broadway in revivals of The Man Who Came to Dinner (as Miss Preen opposite Nathan Lane) and The Man Who Had All the Luck and appeared on Ed, Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Conviction, Rescue Me, and Search Party.
