Meet Big Bird's Orchestra is part of a series of Sesame Street books designed to introduce children to music concepts: in this case, the concept is instrument sounds. In 1993, the concept was updated as Big Bird Meets the Orchestra, with a new plot, new illustrations, and updated characters.
In the story, Big Bird is the conductor of an orchestra consisting of a number of his friends from Sesame Street. Together, they introduce Oscar the Grouch to the sounds of the orchestra.
Excerpts include:
- Eine Kleine Nachtmusik - Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
- Peter and the Wolf - Sergei Prokofiev
- Theme from Abdelazar - Henry Purcell
- Festival music for Vienna - Richard Strauss
- Rhapsody in Blue - George Gershwin
