DEBUT | 2001 |
Mel is one of the quartet of monsters featured in the Monster Clubhouse segments on Sesame Street. He has blue fur, with a wild mop of hair and two small horns. His speech sounds like gibberish to the home viewer, but his Monster Clubhouse friends Phoebe, Googel, and Narf can understand him with no trouble; Phoebe typically translates his speech for the viewer's benefit.
The puppet used for Mel bears a striking resemblance to the members of the Shagri-Las, although Mel possesses horns, a chubbier body and a thinner face.
Since the "Monster Clubhouse" segments were discontinued, the Mel puppet continues to be used as a background monster in various projects, including The Street We Live On, When You Wish Upon a Pickle (performed by Eric Jacobson), A Celebration of Me, Grover, and the music video "Me Want It (But Me Wait)."
