Oscar gets an earful from Melvin Meanie

Oscar gets an earful from Melvin Meanie

Melvin Meanie is a Grouch who does not live on Sesame Street but maintains a long distance friendship with Oscar the Grouch. Never seen on camera, he is heard when he debuts in Sesame Street Episode 0115, when Oscar dials his phone number (123-456-789) by mistake when trying to reach Dial a Grouch. An indignant, coughing voice answers. Once Oscar realizes he's speaking to a fellow Grouch, their argument turns into friendship (or as close as Grouches get to it), with Oscar inviting Melvin to join the next meeting of the Disagreeable Order of Grouches.

For several seasons thereafter, when Oscar mentions a Grouch friend, it's usually Melvin, as they exchange gifts (usually by mail). Oscar gets Melvin a rock for his birthday (0234) and makes some butterscotch-sardine cookies for him (0412), while Melvin sends Oscar a postcard from Mud Island (0261) and a cactus from Death Valley (0297). The pair go on a fishing trip in the swamp (0272), participate in the Trash Can Derby (0550), and Oscar watches his friend's plants while he's away (0848).

Melvin is last mentioned in Episode 1087, when Oscar wants to borrow The Crackpot Cookbook from the bookmobile, only to find Melvin Meanie already checked it out.

Notes[]

  • Oscar has mentioned having a Grouch cousin named Melvin in Episode 0249 and 0509.
