Michael Clayton McCarthy (1959-2020) was a writer and actor who contributed to Sesame Street as an uncredited writer between 1985 and 1987.
McCarthy's other television writing credits included Saturday Night Live (1983-84 season) and The Drew Carey Show, and he worked as a program consultant on Whose Line Is It Anyway? Acting credits include episodes of The Nanny, Coach, Freaks and Geeks, Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Jimmy Kimmel Live, According to Jim, and Mike & Molly.
McCarthy was an alumnus of the storied improvisational comedy theater The Second City's Chicago branch, where he also initiated its ongoing comedy writing program. He also created a similar writing program at the now-defunct iO (ImprovOlympic) West Theater in Hollywood.
