Telly Monster has the scoop on the first day of school, reporting from P.S. 0's first-grade classroom. While the room is currently empty, he eagerly anticipates that children will rush in any minute with a teacher in tow. Nothing happens just yet, so he decides to pad his report by giving a tour of the classroom. He shows viewers the desks, the painting table, and even the windows, all the while becoming increasingly worried as to where the students are. Finally, someone else enters the room, whom Telly mistakes as being the teacher, but is actually a plumber assigned to fix the drinking fountain. She clarifies that tomorrow is the actual first day of school. Telly bemoans that he now doesn't have a story, so the plumber offers to be interviewed about her line of work. Telly listens intently as she recalls having to deal with an alligator in someone's bathtub.
Notes[]
A scripted exchange not used in the final version involves Telly yelling at a crew member named Clancy to "lower the boom," with a boom mike bonking him on the head before he starts his report.[1] This references the Irish-flavored novelty song "Clancy Lowered the Boom," which was a hit for Dennis Day.
This is one of the only times Telly wears a reporter's trenchcoat. Subsequently, his typical wardrobe while out on the news beat would consist of just a fedora, a collar, and tie.
