Monsters Come in Many Colors! is a 1980 Sesame Street storybook that explains how monsters get their colors.
According to Herry Monster, monsters are naturally a dull beige color. They visit the monster paint factory to choose their own colors to match their environment. Monsters who paint their entire bodies in one color are shown camouflaging themselves in natural surroundings, such as Frazzle hiding in a pumpkin patch. One little monster chooses to paint herself a mix of red, yellow, blue and green, so she can hide in a flower garden -- or in a crowd of colorful monsters.
