During the early years of Sesame Street, Mr. Hooper (the owner and proprietor of his namesake store) was more than a mere candy man. He was an enthusiastic inventor on the side, creating various devices (typically with "Super Duper" in the name) in order to benefit the various needs of the Sesame Street residents, though the devices would usually either malfunction or give unexpected results.
Only occasionally could the device prove practical for store or everyday use. More often, Mr. Hooper's machines existed merely to help manifest the letter or number of the day, in the spirit of pedagogical-public mindedness to his fellow street residents.
Inventions[]
Picture | Description |
---|---|
Episode 0003 - Super Duper Abracadabra Two Maker Designed so that whenever one item is placed inside, out comes two - only instead of two of the same item, it's an actual physical number 2. | |
Episode 0005 - Super Duper Secret Stealer Stopper A burglar alarm variation which causes music to come out of the soda water faucet, lest anyone steal one of Mr. Hooper's famous sodas. It would prevent theft (it causes its inventor to dance out of the store), but also soda making to begin with. | |
Episode 0010 - Super Duper Deluxe Invisible Raincoat The fundamental flaw, as revealed by a sudden shower after Mr. Hooper takes it off, is that you can't *see* it to put it back on. | |
Episode 0017 - Super Hiccup Stopper Mr. Hooper invents a large contraption to help stop Oscar's hiccups. He cranks the machine into action, and as Oscar complains he finds that his hiccups are gone. The others, however, find that they've got the hiccups instead. | |
Episode 0024 - Super Duper Match Maker Designed to create three matching items after an item is placed inside. When the machine has done its work, two of the objects belong together each time while the third never does. | |
Episode 0028 - Super Automatic Remote-Control Elevator This one does work as intended, used to raise a basket to deliver groceries. But after Mr. Hooper has spent so much time fetching items to protect his machine, he finds he forgot to fill the basket and has to hand deliver the groceries anyway. | |
Episode 0031 - Super Alphabet Maker As an example, Mr. Hooper sets the dial to "L" and pushes the button, and out comes a lollipop. He pushes the button two more times, and gets a lightbulb, then the sound of laughter. | |
Episode 0034 - Heaven Hopper and Cloud Caper-Cutter On a windy day, Mr. Hooper showcases an unusual-looking kite he calls "Hooper's Heaven Hopper and Cloud Caper-Cutter." It doesn't work as planned and drags on the ground. (Hooper: "Maybe there was too much aereonautic downdraft torque on the reflyalizer...") | |
Episode 0041 - Super Duper Newspaper Machine Mr. Hooper intended to replace the old-fashioned newsstand outside his shop with this invention. He demonstrates the machine by having Gordon ask for a paper. With the turns of the dials and a push of the button, the machine reveals a gold-gloved hand that tosses him a rolled-up newspaper. After getting a second paper, the machine goes haywire, and the hand begins tossing newspapers everywhere. | |
Episode 0054 - Super Duper Ten Machine Creates ten of any small object. It works perfectly on small objects like jellybeans or balls, but Big Bird breaks it by trying it on a nearby garbage can and makes ten garbage cans, wrecking the machine. | |
Sesame Street Cast Tours - Super Duper Radar Scope Used to try and locate Big Bird during live shows.[1] The device was featured at Children's Christmas at the White House and Sesame Street in San Francisco. |
