Material cut from Muppet Treasure Island.

MTI-Boats
The opening tracking shot of the film originally showed the boats of the pirates arriving on the beach. However, according to the DVD audio commentary, while the crew spent a lot of time filming the scene, the shot was cut because they couldn't get the boats to land on the shore quickly and smoothly enough. Instead the scene simply cuts from the sea to a treasure chest being dropped on the beach by the pirates. Part of the shot can be seen in the theatrical trailer.
BillGator
When Long John, Jim Hawkins and the pirates arrive on the island, there was a shot of the ship with an alligator (Bill Barretta) cruising in the water as the camera pans to the band playing among the rocks on the island. The shot was trimmed for time.[1]
GiveItToHim
When Bad Polly orders Clueless Morgan to "give it to him" (referring to the Black Spot given to Long John Silver), Clueless originally replied, "I'm not even attracted to him." At one of the final test screenings, with families present, a mother complained about the line and it was subsequently re-dubbed (to "But, it's not even his birthday.").[2]
MTI-ExtendedSongs
The album version of "Something Better" opens on a solo verse by Jim Hawkins, which is absent from the film. The version of "Cabin Fever" on the album includes some additional lyrics, including a line spoken by Lew Zealand.
MTI-Parrot
An abandoned concept for the film was for Long John Silver to have a pet parrot rather than a lobster -- first the flirty Amazonia the Parrot, later changed to Stevenson the Parrot, who would constantly complain about the inaccuracies between the film and the book.[3] The character was used as the host of the film's CD-ROM game.

Alterations[]

Lines with the word "bloody" were redubbed with alternate phrases in the United Kingdom as the phrase is considered a harsher profanity than it is in the United States:

  • Billy Bones' line "How does she bloody do that?" is changed to "How does she bloomin' do that?"
  • Black Dog's line "Billy's dead and he hasn't got the bloody map." is redubbed as "Billy's dead and he hasn't got the bloomin' map".
  • Long John's line "Where's the bloody treasure?!" has become "Where's the blasted treasure?!"

The Disney+ release of the film digitally removes the arm-rods visible on the puppets in select shots. Similar edits were made to The Muppet Christmas Carol for its release on the platform.

Television edits[]

When aired on ABC on May 27, 2001, the following scenes were cut:

  • The song "Something Better."
  • The introduction to the scene following the night at The Admiral Benbow Inn, including a woman selling potatoes.
  • The principal characters initially making their way towards the ship while on the dock.
  • Squire Trelawney congratulating Mr. Bimbo on preparing the voyage.
  • Some of Captain Smollet's arrival is cut, including an elderly woman shouting at the speeding carriage.
  • Part of the early conference in Captain Smollet's office, in which Long John Silver unsuccessfully attempts to give the officers alcohol.
  • Jim Hawkins' line "I'm sorry your present didn't work out" in the scene that follows is replaced by a new line (dubbed in by a different actor): "And then he told us all to get out".
  • Portions of the crew's restlessness prior to the "Cabin Fever" musical number.
  • When Long John Silver decides not to shoot Jim Hawkins, the line "Oh, Hell, Jim" is edited to remove "Hell".

When aired on ABC Family, the following scenes were cut:

  • A portion of the first Squire Trelawney scene (mentioning "the big, blue, wet thing").
  • Statler and Waldorf's first appearance as the figurehead.
  • Some of Captain Smollet's arrival, including an elderly woman shouting at the speeding carriage and Sam's mention of Smollet's "demons."
  • Captain Smollet asking some of the crew to join him in his cabin following the role call.

When shown on BBC 1, the following line "Where's the blasted treasure?" is only half redubbed; Long John is heard to say "Where's the..." as if he was going to say the original US version's line "Where's the bloody treasure?", but then instantly says the redubbed "...blasted treasure?" part of the line.
