Noranti, after undergoing Guowmuhr
Utu-Noranti Pralatong, often referred to as simply Noranti or by the nicknames "Old Woman" and "Grandma," is a mysterious Traskan herbalist who makes herself at home on Moya. The other crew members don't know what to make of her strange ways (and awful-tasting soup), but she proves her worth time and again.
Debuting in the Farscape season three finale "Dog with Two Bones," Noranti suddenly appears as an eccentric refugee that escaped the wreckage of Scorpius' Command Carrier. She serves as the crew's cook and healer, and at 293 years old, is slightly senile.
Noranti employs hallucinogenic dust, unorthodox medicinal concoctions, and ritualistic techniques to induce visions and altered mental states. She is capable of mind-reading and projecting individuals into experiences of the past or future. Her title, "Utu," is of Traskan origin.
In Farscape: The Peacekeeper Wars, Noranti discovers that the inhabitants of Qujaga are surviving descendants of the Eidelons. Following the end of the war, Noranti remains on Moya but falls into a coma shortly thereafter. Her comatose body becomes covered in a chrysalis, and she emerges as a young woman, a process called Guowmuhr. However, her life force soon starts fluctuating and the Guowmuhr begins reversing; Noranti realizes she is dying. She ultimately sacrifices her life to save D'Argo Sun-Crichton.
Notes[]
- For certain scenes in The Peacekeeper Wars, Noranti was played by a stand-in, Amanda Wenban.
