The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a standardized color reproduction system, allowing designers to match specific colors regardless of the equipment used to produce the color.
Pantone numbers are often given in character style guides to ensure that artists use consistent colors when depicting Muppet or Henson characters, though they don't always reflect the colors of the actual puppets. Gonzo, for example, has a mix of blue, yellow, purple, and pink for his nose and muzzle area; in many pieces of merchandise, they are simplified to a solid shade of either light blue or lavender.
Many of the same colors recur on multiple different characters. This establishes a palette for a show, helping the characters look like they belong together. On Sesame Street, Abby Cadabby's eyes are the same shade of blue as Cookie Monster's fur, and Ernie's nose is the same shade of red as Elmo's fur. On The Muppet Show, Dr. Teeth has the same skin tone as Kermit the Frog, Beaker's hair is the same shade as Floyd Pepper's nose, and Fozzie Bear's hat and eyebrows are the same color as Rizzo the Rat's fur.
