Music by Léo Delibes
Date 1876
Source Sylvia (ballet)

"Pizzicato," also listed as "Pizzicati," is the popular term for a specific passage from Léo Delibes' ballet Sylvia. It comes during the third act and the music (with individual notes carefully spaced out) is suggestive of foot movements or tip-toeing. As a result, it has been widely sampled, from comedy shows to cartoons.

It was used in episode 112 of The Muppet Show, as the Balloon-Head Conductor leads his balloon orchestra into popping in time.

A version of the piece was also heard when Statler makes Waldorf "dance" with his pistol in Episode 322.

In Episode 3577 of Sesame Street, the tune plays as Bob imagines conducing an orchestra, considering whether to hire a Honker to replace the trumpet player in his band.
