Portman works at her piano in October of 1986, just a few months prior to The StoryTeller premiere.
Portman recalls Jim Henson trying to whistle during recording sessions for "The Soldier and Death."
Rachel Portman (b. 1960) is an Academy Award-winning composer who scored The StoryTeller and the Greek Myths follow-up series (featured together on a 3-CD soundtrack), as well as the "Monster Maker" and "Living with Dinosaurs" segments of The Jim Henson Hour. For her work on The StoryTeller, Portman received the Anthony Asquith Award from the British Film Institute.[1]
Portman also wrote the score for the 1996 film The Adventures of Pinocchio, which used special effects by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, and her music from The Cider House Rules was used in a PBS promo featuring Big Bird and a little girl traveling around the world.
Her other credits include the 1989 TV movie Young Charlie Chaplin, The Joy Luck Club, Disney's Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, the 1996 film adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma, The Cider House Rules (with Michael Caine), Chocolat (with Johnny Depp), and Mona Lisa Smile (with Julia Roberts and Maggie Gyllenhaal). She has also written a children's opera, The Little Prince, and a musical based on Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie.
