Rainbows are arcs of color formed in the sky (and in other light dispersing circumstances, such as certain glasses and prisms), containing a variying number of colors from the spectrum. The arc is an optical phenomenon rooted in the way the light is refracted, or dispersed, but the "rain" part of the name comes from its cause, which is water droplets in the air. The water element is why they also appear near waterfalls, fountains, and similar bodies.
The Biblical story of Noah culminates in God creating the first rainbow after the flood. According to folklore, leprechauns hide their pots of gold at the end of the rainbow. A more credible amphibian theorist has pondered the cultural impact, wondering why there are so many songs about rainbows. Despite their frequent association, rainbows have never officially endorsed nor profited from My Little Pony and tie-ins.
