White House 1978 Henson Raposo Big Bird Carter Cronkite

Jim Henson, Walter Cronkite, Rosalynn Carter, Big Bird, and Joe Raposo.

Rosalynn Carter (b. 1927) was the First Lady of the United States from 1977 to 1981 during the presidency of her husband Jimmy Carter.

On December 21, 1978, Carter hosted the annual White House Christmas party with special guests Jim Henson, Kermit the Frog, and Big Bird who sang songs with Sesame Street composer Joe Raposo on piano accompanied by the United States Marine Band.

In thanks for his participation, Carter sent Jim Henson a letter on White House stationary:

Dear Jim,

The children's party was special! Thank you so much for coming to the White House — with your "creations" and performing for us.

Jimmy and I both send best wishes to you and your family for a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
