During a livestream with the Contemporary Jewish Museum in 2022, Dave Goelz described his trepidation with developing Zoot in the early days on The Muppet Show. He was approached by Cahn at The Café Royal during an after party for the premiere of The Muppet Movie, who told him, (paraphrased) "They say you're the guy who does Zoot. I'm not kidding, I've known so many sax players just like him. He's amazing! I don't know how you do that character, it's just magnificent!" He gave Goelz his phone number and address, but Goelz didn't take him up on the offer to meet with him until years later.[1]
