A color chart from the 1970s with Muppet fabric samples, denoting early specific Pantone colors of various characters.
The Pantone Matching System (PMS) is a standardized color reproduction system, allowing designers to match specific colors regardless of the equipment used to produce the color.
Pantone numbers are often given in Character style guides to ensure that artists use consistent colors when depicting Muppet characters.
Many of the same colors recur on multiple different characters. This establishes a palette for a show, helping the characters look like they belong together. On Sesame Street, Bert and Big Bird are both the same shade of yellow, and Ernie's nose is the same shade of red as Grover's lower lip. On The Muppet Show, Dr. Teeth has skin the color of Scooter's jacket, a nose the color of Floyd's mustache, and a hat the color of Miss Piggy's lavender gloves.
