:::::We should also remember what "What Muppet Wiki is" is... :) I think this should be a manifesto, a statement of our principles about what we include and what we don't include. It's not a list of our policies, and it's not a style guide. Those things are also important, but I think they deserve their own page. This should be a fairly short, readable list of what topics are included on the wiki. -- [[User:Toughpigs|Danny]] ([[User talk:Toughpigs|talk]]) 12:18, 17 December 2006 (UTC)

So what is Muppet Wiki, anyway?

Scott suggested on Current events that we create a page defining what Muppet Wiki is and is not. I'm opening the page so that we can start discussing what might be included in a definition like that. The purpose, I imagine, is to figure out what should be included here, and what shouldn't. Where do we start? -- Danny (talk) 21:00, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

My own brainstorming, with the natural understanding that any point is disputable, based on general policies, scope, and changes in the Wiki. First, is, which actually may be the harder part, and a lot of it seems redundant; it's hard to know in this case what's too far or not enough:
• Muppet Wiki is a repository for all things related to the Muppets, as produced by Jim Henson or the Jim Henson Company, including The Muppet Show, Bear in the Big Blue House, etc. See Muppet TV Shows for qualifying series.
• Muppet Wiki is a database for Sesame Street, including not just Muppets but human cast members, regular animated inserts, songs, locations, etc.
• Muppet Wiki is a database for The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, Farscape, Dinosaurs, and other Jim Henson's Creature Shop productions, produced by the Jim Henson Company as a whole.
• Muppet Wiki includes partial coverage of films where the Creature Shop served as an effects house, providing either characters, costuming, or digital effects, but was not primarily involved in the project as a whole. If you are not certain as to whether a particular item should be covered, feel free to browse other similar entries, or ask a question.
• Muppet Wiki profiles puppeteers, actors, writers, celebrities, and others who directly contributed to Muppet/Henson productions.
• Muppet Wiki tracks the early non-Muppet experimental films of Jim Henson, including Time Piece and The Cube
• Muppet Wiki covers any appearances by Muppets in outside media; references to other people, places, or things within Muppet/Henson productions; and notable or recurring mentions of the Muppets/Henson in outside films, TV shows, etc.
• Muppet Wiki is a community of diverse people joining together to document in one place, more than mankind was meant to know about Frackles, Fraggles, and Honkers.
The is nots-
• Muppet Wiki is not Wikipedia. While software and certain etiquette is shared, Muppet Wiki has its own policies and formats. See Policies and Guidelines.
• Muppet Wiki is not an official affiliate of the Jim Henson Company, Sesame Workshop, or Disney. Any correspondence intended for those entities should be sent elsewhere.
• Muppet Wiki is not a trading post. While we provide information on merchandise and availability of Muppet shows, requests for those do not belong on article talk pages, and are more appropriate on fan forums.
• Muppet Wiki is not a soap box. Similarly, general opinions on favorite characters, pet peeves, least favorite films, and so on, and any opinionated language should be kept out of articles and article talk pages. Personal preferences can be expressed on user talk pages.
• Muppet Wiki is not a general puppetry wiki. Though the database covers many broad topics that intersect with the Muppets, "Muppet-like" TV shows, children's TV in general, and non-Henson puppet movies do not belong here. There are the exceptions, if they fall under appearances (Muppet characters guest starred on the series), references (dialogue a Muppet/Henson production mentioned the series), or recurring Muppet mentions (direct spoofs or references to Muppets within a production). (See Between the Lions, Book of Pooh, Blue (dog))
• Muppet Wiki is not a file sharing site. While appropriate YouTube links are sometimes included for non-commercially available material, general links to torrents or direct uploading of files are forbidden; the latter is occasionally allowed, at the admins' discretion, for purely educational purposes or to satisfy disputes. Images, however, are encouraged, provided there are no specific copyright concerns.
• Muppet Wiki is not a depository for your favorite Muppet quotes. Quotes may be integrated into an article, or a transcript may be posted of short, non-commercially available scenes. But a list of personal favorite sayings in a character or show's article is discouraged, as it tends to be open to dispute and bias.
• Muppet Wiki is not a burgundy shetland pony. Not to our knowledge, anyway. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 22:22, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Okay, here are my additions, what I don't see already posted (nice job, guys!) Oh --- and I also edited a couple of things above in cases where I thought specific examples could be useful.

• Due to copyright concerns, Muppet Wiki is not a repository for song lyrics. Song lyrics on external sites may be linked.
• Muppet Wiki is not a source for complete transcripts of Muppet / Henson productions. Transcripts of portions of programs may be included only for older programs not widely available.
• Articles for newspapers and magazines may be posted, but should only contain a general description of the usual contents of the publication along with a summary of any Muppet / Henson mentions in specific articles. (See Starlog, Mad (magazine)}
• Muppet Wiki is not freely open to editing without registration. Please see Muppet Wiki Username Policy.
• Muppet Wiki is not intended to cover more-detailed aspects of performers not heavily involved in Muppet productions. While some biographical details are fine, more specific details are generally excluded. A link to Wikipedia may be provided in these cases, using the code {{wikipedia}} (See Samuel L. Jackson, Jonathan Freeman)
• If you have any questions, concerns or debates about these guidelines, feel free to post them at the talk page for this article, at Current Events or at the discussion for a Muppet Wiki administrator. Items not meeting these guidelines are subject to removal or editing.
• Muppet Wiki is often a source for many items that share the same name. Before contributing, check carefully for existing entries, redirects and disambiguation pages.
• Muppet Wiki is not an apple, though we do have an entry for Apple. George B. (talk) 23:10, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

P.S. --- Whenever this is up and running I think it might be a good idea to A.) include it the welcome message, B.) possibly have it display automatically when anyone who's new to the Wiki goes to edit something. I mean, not the page itself, but a link to it. George B. (talk) 23:32, 16 December 2006 (UTC)

Nice spotting of the username thing, George. That should be mentioned up front. I'm a little iffy on the wording of the performer biography thing, though. We're not exhaustive generally, but it's also not so much because of policy that pages like Samuel L. Jackson or Freeman are short as it is just the person creating them. In many cases with celebs, since so much info is available elsewhere, we cut it short, but not always. A better mid-level example would be Robert Morley, and speaking for myself, with some folks like Creature Shop voice actors and other character actor types for whom Wikipedia and the like generally have little, I try to flesh them out further (like Timothy Bateson). So I'm a little uncomfortable with that part of it. Aside from that, useful additions all. -- Andrew Leal (talk) 03:26, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
Thanks! One other one I thought of --- Muppet Wiki is not a repository or source for fanfiction or fanart, though some aspects of the Fandom are covered. George B. (talk) 04:08, 17 December 2006 (UTC)
