Scotland Yard is the common term used to refer to the headquarters of London's Metropolitan Police (technically "New Scotland Yard" since 1890). The term has also come to be synonymous with the police force itself, particularly in detective fiction and related media. Sherlock Holmes routinely referred to them dismissively, noting in his first case A Study in Scarlet that crimes these days have motives so apparent "even a Scotland Yard official can see through them."
