Sesame Street Season 24 aired from November 9, 1992, to May 7, 1993.

Overview[]

Continuing its treatment on race relations started in season 22, the curriculum focus for season 24 is on Latino culture, with particular emphasis on Puerto Ricans, Cuban Americans, and Mexican Americans.[1] In one episode, Maria gets a visit from her childhood friend Gloria Montoya, and the two explain to Big Bird and Snuffy how Puerto Rican and Cuban American people can be different yet share some similarities. A later episode features Telly Monster joining in on a reunion of Maria's family, where Telly learns that Puerto Ricans come in many sizes, ages, and colors. "There will also be more emphasis on the Spanish language," says Valeria Lovelace, as research at the time showed that many children had negative feelings about Spanish. To counter this, the show features songs about the words abierto and cerrado (exemplified by an Anything Muppet man whose house is aided by said words), and casa; preschoolers also learn simple words and phrases that will help them make friends with Spanish speakers, such as "quiero jugar."[2] Several of the guest stars, such as Los Pleneros de la 21, Tito Puente, and Los Lobos, also celebrate their Latino heritage with the cast and Muppets.

A new recurring segment, "Big Bird's Video Postcards," has Big Bird visiting different parts of the United States and learning about people of different ethnicities and participating in their cultural activities or pastimes. With the focus on Latino culture, Big Bird watches mask-making in Spanish Harlem, joins children in playing Cuban games in Union City, N.J., conducts a children's mariachi band, and eats a birdseed burrito while visiting his friend Diego in Arizona.[2]

In addition to these lessons, broken bones and hospital procedures are featured in a multi-episode story arc where Telly breaks his arm during a game of tag. Viewers are brought along his journey with his initial visit to the hospital, the x-ray of his injured arm, how a cast is applied, the difficulties of waiting for the healing process to proceed, and how to adapt with the use of only one arm. Luis, who had previously had the same thing happen to him, guides Telly during these episodes.

Characters and segments[]

As 1992 was an election year, Sesame Street got into political satire with the introduction of H. Ross Parrot, who encouraged kids to use the alphabet whenever they can. Other parody characters include the world's greatest actor Sir John Feelgood and Grouch talk show host Sally Messy Yuckyael. Stinky the Stinkweed happens to also have his origin within Grouch culture, making his first appearance in the story The Stinkweed and the Sun, while Papa Bear and Mama Bear make their first appearance in a "wap song" performed by their son Baby Bear. Kingston Livingston III, a Muppet child who prides himself in individuality, visits Sesame Street for the first time, as does the "land explorer" Wanda Cousteau, a fish who boldly goes where no fish has gone before.

In addition to Big Bird's postcards, the Count gets his own recurring segment: "The Count's Storybook Theatre," where stories with a numerical bent are featured. Shorter segments feature the alphabet formed in different ways, be it growing in a garden, made by art supplies, formed by floating kids, or falling leaves.

Notes[]

  • Starting with this season, the opening sequence changes from the standard footage of kids playing to an upbeat, colorful sequence with a calypso version of the theme. More Muppets are also included in it.
  • Likewise, this season also introduces a new closing credits sequence set to a hip-hop version of the theme, with animation by Joey Ahlbum and featuring appearances by Elmo and Big Bird. This sequence would continue to be used until 2007, long after the calypso opening was retired.
