Sesame Street Season 6 aired from November 4, 1974, to May 2, 1975.

Overview[]

The curriculum for Season 6 focuses on affect behavior, divergent thinking, career awareness, and social interactions,[1] as well as creativity.[2]

There are many examples that these lessons are demonstrated throughout this season of Sesame Street. Affect behavior is featured in a segment in which Suzetta Something confides in Roosevelt Franklin when Hardhead Henry Harris calls her a "cantaloupe head." Big Bird demonstrates divergent thinking in Episode 0670 when coming up with solutions in case he needs to find his way back home after getting lost. The song "Women Can Be" explores some of the many career options for women, and Oscar tries to get some peace and quiet in Episode 0698 by taking up different jobs; in a later episode, Maria gets a job on a construction site as a riveter. Creativity is emphasized in Episode 0720, in which the residents of Sesame Street find various uses for pencils.

Characters and segments[]

Several new characters and inserts are seen for the first time during season 6. In the season premiere, viewers are introduced to Rodeo Rosie, a boisterous cowgirl who has a tendency to exaggerate and overreact to situations. Songwriter Don Music, who helps demonstrate creativity and perseverance, is an often-stressed artist who usually ends up rewriting well-known songs or composing ridiculous numbers. The chatty Poco Loco joins his feathered friend Big Bird in several episodes, though Big Bird frustratingly has to put up with the parrot's repetitions. Linda Bove, a performer from the Little Theater of the Deaf, begins to make more appearances with the cast as Linda, eventually becoming a full-time cast member by season 8.

The Typewriter makes frequent appearances demonstrating letters of the alphabet, very much in the same manner as the first season's Speech Balloon series. Segments featuring the Muppet characters from the Ice Follies live shows are also seen, as well as the debut of the always-chaotic episodes of Alphabet Chat, hosted by the almost-dignified Mr. Chatterly. The practice of using comedy duos to demonstrate problem-solving skills (such as Buddy and Jim and Wally and Ralph) is no longer a recurring segment.

Notes[]

  • Sam Pottle replaces Joe Raposo as music director this season.
  • Starting this season, Roscoe Orman takes over the role of Gordon.
  • This is the last season Jerry Juhl worked on as a writer.
  • This is also the final season to have animated opening number sequences.
  • This season introduces a practice in which episodes that aired two seasons before are recycled and combined with a different set of inserts to create whole new episodes.
