Silas Marner is an 1861 novel by George Eliot. The title character is a weaver who, after a disillusioning betrayal in his previous religious community, retreats into isolation and miserliness. After his gold hoard is stolen, Marner finds and raises an abandoned infant girl as his own, finding new purpose in life and involvement in his community.
The novel has often been adapted for other media, usually as a Victorian period piece, although the 1994 Steve Martin film A Simple Twist of Fate modernized the story and renamed the characters.

- Though the title isn't given, Susan reads the novel in a series of "reading quickies" in Sesame Street Episode 0263. Showing what a mess it would would be if everyone read the same things, the other street residents all try to read the book aloud over her shoulder, reciting snippets from the first paragraph out of order (describing the spinning wheel and how "the shepherd's dog barked.")
