Alex, better known as "Smart Alex", is an enthusiastic Muppet boy who first appeared in Episode 0439 of Sesame Street.
Smart Alex is a speedy runner and a quick thinker. When Big Bird first meets him, he becomes worried that his friends will like Smart Alex more than him. Eventually Big Bird thinks that he's not wanted and decides to leave, but everybody tells him that they love him just the way he is. Smart Alex agrees, thinking he'd be a great friend.
The design of the character was re-used as Cornelius in Episode 0505, where he was performed by Frank Oz. He appears later in Episode 0582 performed by Nelson again, ordering a hamburger at Hooper's Store.
