Smithsonian Fantastic Journey is a set of two television specials produced to commemorate the 150th anniversary of The Smithsonian Institution. Broadcast on CBS in 1996, they were hosted by Dan Rather and featured several correspondents including Morley Safer, John Travolta, Robin Williams, Kermit the Frog, and Miss Piggy.

The first special aired on January 25th featuring Kermit as the host of a segment covering an upcoming national tour of museum items. Kermit appears on-screen and in voiceover explaining the work that goes into preparing relics for a traveling exhibition. Although he and other commentators mention that Kermit himself will be one of the items on display, the original Kermit puppet is not shown; instead, the animated, modern Kermit inserts himself into various scenarios such as being cleaned and packaged up for shipment. Beaker also makes a brief cameo during the segment, as well as Steve Whitmire appearing on-screen as a Smithsonian staffer bringing Kermit, stuffed into a box, to a shipping truck.

The second special aired on April 26th and included a briefer appearance by Miss Piggy in a "Smithsonian Minute" spot where she presented a uniform worn by Clark Gable during his time enlisted in the military.

Kermit also appeared in a related TV spot, one of 25 "Smithsonian Minutes" featuring a celebrity highlighting one of the museum's more unusual items. In Kermit's spot he introduces one of the world's first teddy bears.[1]
