DEBUT | 1986 |
A sock monkey is a stuffed doll made from socks that has been modeled after the likeness of a monkey. Versions of sock monkeys date back to the Victorian era, followed in the Unites States by what is known as the more defined look in the early 1900s. A typical sock monkey is brown and white with red lips formed from the heel of the sock.
A sock monkey appears as a character in the 1986 television special, The Christmas Toy. It resides in the playroom of the children in the Jones family, living amongst a host of other toys that come to life when the humans aren't looking. This sock monkey is adorned with green pom-poms on several of its appendages, some of which are further embellished with spherical bells.
Unique for a puppet character in a Muppet production, the sock monkey is operated exclusively as a marionette.
