Sophie's Choice is a 1979 novel by William Styron which was adapted as a 1982 film by director Alan J. Pakula. It tells the story of three friends living together in Brooklyn following World War II, and the secrets harbored by Sophie, who was forced to make a horrific choice during her time in a Nazi concentration camp. Meryl Streep was recognized with several accolades for her performance in the film, including the Oscar for Best Actress.

  • The Sesame Street Muppet character Meryl Sheep received a fair amount of press during her debut in the show's 18th season. Several newspaper articles pointed out the similarity of the character's accent to the one used by her namesake Meryl Streep in Sophie's Choice. Head writer Norman Stiles confirmed the observation, describing her as "a sheep, with a middle European accent, somewhat reminiscent of someone we knew in Sophie's Choice, but not exactly."[1]
  • When asked what literary classic the Muppets should adapt next during a 2014 appearance on Moviefone Unscripted, Sophie's Choice was named by Ricky Gervais, suggesting "Meryl here" would win an "Oscar straight away." After Piggy agrees, Gervais adds that it's probably best they not explore the implications further.
