Sounds of Our Lives is a Sesame Street soap opera sketch from season 21, inspired by the series Days of Our Lives.
As the episode begins, we find Dirk in Deirdre's living room, ring box in hand, about to ask her an important question. Before he can fully propose, Deirdre catches the sound of a dripping faucet in the kitchen and goes to turn it off. Once she returns, Dirk tries posing his question again, when Deirdre hears the loud sound of her ticking alarm clock. She darts off to fetch it and silence it by tossing it out the front door.
As Dirk tries once more to propose, the sounds of a train whistle indicate the arrival of the 8:40 express, which drives right through the house. Dirk finally loses his temper, complaining that he can't get a word in edgewise with all these sounds. Deidre responds that these are "the sounds of our lives." Fed up, Dirk makes a sound of his own - the slamming of the front door as he storms off.
The announcer teases tomorrow's edition, where Deirdre listens to the loud sounds of a jackhammer outside her house (which jostles the screen and ending title card).
