Stanley Kubrick (1928-1999) was an acclaimed filmmaker, always directing and usually producing and writing or co-writing his own movies as well. He began as a photographer and documentary maker before shifting to feature films, where he continued to emphasize cinematography techniques and advancements.
Kubrick's early movies were film noir and several were anti-war pieces (notably Paths of Glory, and in a darkly comedic vein, Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb). His work covered other genres including historical epics (Spartacus, Barry Lyndon), sci-fi (2001: A Space Odyssey and elements of A Clockwork Orange), and horror (adapting the Stephen King novel The Shining). His final film was the posthumously released Eyes Wide Shut (1999).
