Version?[]

I haven't seen the Dyan Cannon episode, but *is* this song the Kelly version, or the Stephen Foster tune? If the Kelly version, with "What gentler eye, what nobler heart" chorus, the title in Songs of the Pogo is "Man's Best Friend" (and the dog's name spelled "Tray"). The Foster version featured the chorus "Old dog Tray's ever faithful/Grief cannot drive him away. He's gentle, he is kind/I'll never, never find/A better friend than old dog Tray." --Andrew, Aleal 04:59, 25 March 2006 (UTC)

Ol' Brown Ears is Back spells it "Trey," so I went with it. They credit Walt Kelly as the composer, and yes, the lyrics are "What gentler eye, what nobler heart." Beyond that, I know nothing. Nothing! -- Scott Scarecroe 05:23, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
Then Ol' Brown Ears goofed. Mind if I fiddle and maybe move the page? It comes from the 1956 album Songs of the Pogo, and both music and lyrics are indeed from Kelly (who was also the singer; it was loosely riffing on the Foster song title, and was a running gag in the strip, as oft spoken by Beauregarde Bugle Boy). The album listed it as "Man's Best Friend", and the accompanying lyrics spelled it Tray. --Andrew Aleal 05:29, 25 March 2006 (UTC)
