Onky and Mack

Is Onky the same puppet as Mack, from the Claussen's Bakery and Southern Bell Telephone ads? I don't have a picture in front of me, but I remember them looking pretty much the same. -- Toughpigs 12:32, 6 Jan 2006 (UTC)

I really like Onky, but we'd have to drop "the grocer". Mack would be ok, too. Where did the name Onky even come from? Either way, I'll work on getting the two of them together into one listing later on.--Sandwichpuncher 15:01, 6 Jan 2006 (UTC)

I think Onky came from a list of commercials that was put together by Karen Falk at the Henson Archives. I know I've seen the names "Mack and Suzy" somewhere, but I can't put my finger on where. That's probably why I'm leaning towards Mack. -- Toughpigs 15:25, 6 Jan 2006 (UTC)

Mack and Onky are the same puppet, yes. Mack And Suzy did Bell Telephone ads. You can see them in a "Monsters" music montage in the 30 years special, as Big V eats Mack/Onky. --Scooter

I just looked at the wiki pages, and I think I've figured it out. The first appearance of the puppet that we know about was Claussen's Bakery in 1964, where he was called Mack. Then Mack and Suzy did commercials for C & P Telephone Co. of VA from 1965-1968, and also for Southern Bell Telephone from 1966-1968.

The puppet also appeared in commercials for On-Cor Frozen Foods, which is probably where "Onky the Grocer" comes from. We also have him in that name for McGarry's Sausage, from 1965-1968.

My take on this is that his real name is Mack, and he was temporarily renamed "Onky" for the On Cor ads. He may even have been "Mack" for the McGarry's ads, and the person who said that was Onky (maybe Karen Falk?) mixed up his "real" name with the temporary name.

Sounds solid! So I guess it's proper to keep them as seperate characters since they were officially identified (even if it may have been improperly) as such. I'm happy that the good name of Onky can keep flying high. --Sandwichpuncher 01:41, 7 Jan 2006 (UTC)
