In May 2006, it was announced that the American Ireland Fund would be financing a version of Sesame Street, to be broadcast in Northern Ireland. It was announced in April 2007 that BBC-NI would carry the program.
The series will feature two original Muppets with local accents, as well as the classic American characters.[1]
"Given the positive and wide-ranging developments that have taken place over the recent years, it's a tremendously exciting time to be working in Northern Ireland," the president of Sesame Workshop, Gary Knell, was quoted as saying.
Newspapers have nicknamed the series "Stormont Street", after the building in which the local peace deal between Catholics and Protestants was signed.[1]
