Heckle and Jeckle, top row center, at Hooper's

Terrytoons is the name of the animation studio founded by Paul Terry, as well as the umbrella label for its shorts (sometimes punctuated as "Terry-Toons") and for the stable of characters. It was active from 1929, with theatrical shorts, until 1972. Located in New York state, Terrytoons contrasted with Disney and other Hollywood cartoon studios with its lower budgets but high mass production.

Most of the best known Terrytoons characters emerged in the 1940s, with Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle achieving popularity on the screen and in print comics and storybooks, and later with TV characters like Deputy Dawg. In the TV era, the studio also produced segments aired on Captain Kangaroo. Years after the studio folded, Mighty Mouse and Heckle and Jeckle appeared in new TV cartoons produced by Filmation, and later the mouse only on Mighty Mouse: The New Adventures (1987-1988, produced by former Terrytoons director Ralph Bakshi).
