The Carriage House is a repurposed space which has served many functions under Jim Henson's ownership and beyond. Located at 225 East 67th Street in Manhattan, Henson purchased the building on April 2, 1984, right next door to the former Muppet Workshop at 227 East 67th Street (and down the block from its later home at 201 East 67th Street).
The former carriage house (continued to be referred to as such) primarily serves as a photography studio, capturing images of the Muppets, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock casts for various products, magazines, books, and more. The building would also house additional workflow from the other Muppet Workshops (such as the costuming for Muppet Treasure Island), the occasional puppetry workshop by Jane Henson,[1] and rehearsals for Jim Henson's Musical World.[2]
The ground floor photography studio also doubled as a full-fledged video production studio, with the second floor occupying the production team and editing suite. The studio was used for a range of productions, from smaller short-form pieces (such as PSAs and Muppet Meeting Films[3]) to full specials and series.
In recent years, the upper floors act as the offices for the Jim Henson Legacy, which has held its own events and screenings (referred to as "ScratCH" - Screenings at the Carriage House) in the space.[4] The building also serves as the home for Heather Henson's Green Feather Foundation, which holds its own puppetry and art events in the building. The Jim Henson Foundation also hosts a residency program in the space called Puppetry at the Carriage House.

Notes[]

Cookie Monster in the carriage house kitchen.
- Prior to Henson's ownership, an image of Cookie Monster in the building's ground floor kitchen area was captured for The Sesame Street 1974 Activity Calendar; the building had already been in-use as a photography studio when Henson purchased it.
- The building's exterior and photo studio were seen during John E. Barrett's profile in the Telling Stories with Tomie dePaola episode "Point of View."
