The Dark Crystal read-along came with either a 7" 33 1/3 RPM record or an audio cassette, and a 24-page storybook, illustrated with scenes from the film. The book adaptation was written by Ted Kryczko (who also produced) and Jymn Magon, with text edited by Donna Bass.
The book and cassette was later re-released in a "read-along double set" paired with The Black Stallion Returns.
