Rowlf the Dog is expecting an important call from Hollywood. He describes this certain someone to the operator, who thinks he's referring to Liberace; it's actually Lassie. He tells Jimmy Dean that he's written a letter asking for her paw in marriage and she will be phoning in her answer tonight. The phone rings and it turns out to be Liberace, who will be playing at the wedding.

Jimmy thinks married life would be good for Rowlf, describing how lonely his own life was before finding a wife. Rowlf extends Jimmy an invitation to be his best man - the only man, in fact (everyone else in attendance will be dogs). Jimmy cracks a groaner about wearing his white tie and tails in honor.

While waiting for the phone to ring, Rowlf shows off the ring he intends to give to Lassie - a genuine glass ring that set him back a mere two dollars ("It's the thought that counts...the thought of saving $498.") The money he's saved, he claims, can go toward an apartment, but he has no plans for tons of kids: the signs in his neighborhood say "No Litter."

He imagines having a son named Rowlf Jr. with his looks and Lassie's talent, as a daughter with his looks wouldn't be ideal. The phone starts to ring with a call from Hollywood. Rowlf lustfully and repeatedly kisses the receiver, revealing it's just the long-distance operator: "She's a nice kid, too." Lassie has been called to come to the phone and while Rowlf waits, Jimmy talks up married life. However, as he talks about being "the boss" in the relationship, Rowlf finds Jimmy is rather emasculated (doing the dishes and having his last word be "yes, ma'am.")

Lassie finally gets to the phone and Rowlf is very happy with her answer - she's turned him down. His talk with Jimmy has shown him how great the bachelor life can be and the two sing "Just Bummin' Around."
