The Joy of Sex is a 1972 sex manual by Alex Comfort with penciled illustrations by Chris Foss and color paintings by Charles Raymond. The book was modeled somewhat after Joy of Cooking with its "Gourmet Guide to Love Making" and "Cordon Bleu" subtitles, as well as sections labelled "Starters," "Main Courses," and "Sauces & Pickles." The book was adapted into a film in 1984 with Christopher Lloyd and spawned several revised versions, the sequel More Joy of Sex, and inspired the 1977 publication The Joy of Gay Sex.

- The book features prominently in the January 10, 1976 edition of The Land of Gortch. The sketch begins with Scred and Peuta reading the manual together to fuel ideas for their 400 year long affair. Scred wonders how the book's couple manages to get into some of the positions, such as what's depicted on page 92 (which, in actuality, features no illustration). Their discussion prompts Peuta to come clean with Ploobis about their relationship leading to a discussion between the men in which Ploobis confides that he suspects his wife of six centuries has been cheating on him. When Ploobis demonstrates the physical ire he plans to unleash on the culprit, Scred asks the audience, "What page is that on?!" Unable to confess, Scred shares his anxieties with The Mighty Favog who recommends he seek out self-fulfillment on page 212 of The Joy of Sex (while the page features a section on "Slow Masturbation," despite Favog's submission, the topic is actually covered from the perspective of partnered pleasure).
