"The King's New Clothes" is a song from the film Hans Christian Andersen featuring Danny Kaye in the title role.

The song tells the story of The Emperor's New Clothes by way of a narrator (Kaye, in the film) supported by backing chorus. Loesser swapped "Emperor" for "King" as the word flowed better in song, "When you get home tonight, you try to make up a song with the word emperor in it, and then you’ll see why I had to use the word king instead. I’ll probably start a couple of wars when the picture opens, but I just couldn’t do it the other way."[1]

Kaye's recording from the film's soundtrack was used as a lip-sync track for Sam and Friends a number of times between 1956 and 1960.[2]

On the Sesame Street album Big Bird presents Hans Christian Andersen, the song is bookended by comments from Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch, and performed by the John McCarthy Singers. The album's cover features an illustration of the nude king hiding behind some shrubbery by Tom Cooke.
