The Letter People is a literacy program that originated in the 1960s by Elayne Reiss-Weimann and Rita Friedman. The program stars anthropomorphic characters that represent the letters of the alphabet, with each character having distinctive traits that emphasize what they symbolize. For example, the character of Mr. M has a "munching mouth" and is always eating, while Miss A is always sneezing - "A-choo!" The learning kits included flash cards, a record album, books and toys.
The program led to a 15-minute television puppet series (1974-1976) produced at PBS station KETC in Missouri but syndicated to other PBS stations. The Letter People campaign was revived and revised in the '90s and into the 2000s.
