The Muppets Mayhem is a series starring Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem for Disney+, released on May 10, 2023. The season consists of ten episodes, which were all released at once on the platform.

The series follows The Electric Mayhem — Dr. Teeth on lead vocals and keyboard, Animal on drums, Janice on lead guitar, Floyd Pepper on bass guitar, Zoot on saxophone, and Lips on trumpet — as they set out to record their first studio album of songs.[1]

The series culminated with the release of an album featuring original songs and covers.[2] The original song "Rock On" serves as the series' theme song.

On November 21, 2023, it was announced the series would not be picked up for another season.[3]

Episodes[]

Each episode is referred to as "Track #" and is named after existing songs and albums.

Characters[]

The Muppets are joined by Lilly Singh as Nora, a junior executive for Wax Town Records who oversees the band in their efforts.[1] Additional cast members include Tahj Mowry as Gary "Moog" Moogowski, a super fan of the band who uses his knowledge of the group to aid Nora,[4] Saara Chaudry as Nora's younger sister Hannah, and Anders Holm in a recurring guest role as JJ, a tech entrepreneur and Nora's ex.[5]

In addition to the six established members of the Electric Mayhem band, the series also features some new Muppet characters. According to Adam Goldberg, "We love the old school Muppets, but, you know, I also think just to have a couple new characters for people to fall in love with is a great thing. So I'm really excited for everyone to meet those new Muppets as well."[6] New Muppet characters in the series include Wax Town owner Penny Waxman, and Dr. Teeth's parents Tina and Gerald Teeth.

Apart from the main Muppet performers, performers David Bizzaro and Stephanie D'Abruzzo were singled out in press releases as "guest stars" and receive alphabetical billing with the human guests for episodes where they have prominent roles (as Gerald and Tina).[7]

The series also features many cameo guest stars.

Notes[]

  • This is the first Muppet series, featuring the cast of characters established by The Muppet Show, to not feature Kermit the Frog. Other mainstays such as Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and Gonzo also do not appear. The only other established Muppet characters to appear are Statler and Waldorf, who make a minor cameo in the series finale. Cameos for Kermit and Piggy were considered, but ultimately the creative team decided against it.[8]

Production[]

In the wake of the Mayhem's performance at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in 2016, Bill Barretta began developing a series pitch about the band going on a world tour. He was eventually paired with Adam F. Goldberg and Jeff Yorkes, who were separately pitching a series based around the band. The two factions then began working together on one, unified production.[10]

Filming for the series began on April 25[1][11][12] and wrapped on August 5, 2022.[13] Shooting locations included the RMS Queen Mary[14] and the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.[15]

Each episode runs approximately thirty minutes, with the production team looking at the series as a five hour movie narrative.[16]

On September 9, 2022, a single of "Can You Picture That?" tied to the eventual series album was released. This recording was originally produced for the band's performance at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival in 2016 (and subsequently released as a Sing-Along music video in 2018).

The Electric Mayhem appeared live the following day at the D23 Expo to perform the song and plug the series as a part of the "Disney’s Epic Entertainment Showcase: The Musical: The Extravaganza!" event. Later that afternoon, Floyd, Janice, and Animal participated in the "Meet the Muppets: The Muppets Mayhem Conversation" panel moderated by Tahj Mowry.

A panel for the series was held at New York Comic Con on October 9, featuring cast members Lily Singh, Tahj Mowry and Saara Chaudry, and creators Adam F. Goldberg, Jeff Yorkes and Bill Barretta. Floyd and Animal appeared with a pre-taped message to introduce the first publicly-screened footage from the series.

The series was also plugged during Animal's appearance at the 2022 Game Awards on December 8.
