The Not-Too-Late Show with Elmo is a spin-off of Sesame Street developed exclusively for the HBO Max streaming service. The first season, consisting of 13 episodes, debuted on the platform on May 27, 2020. The first three episodes were available at launch, with new episodes premiering weekly afterwards.[1] Each episode runs 15 minutes long.[2] It has been renewed for a second season.[3]

The series stars Elmo as the host of his own late-night talk show, with Cookie Monster as his sidekick, the rest of the Sesame Street gang as the crew, and celebrity guests. Its main curricular goals are centered on bedtime routines, with each episode demonstrating a different aspect of Elmo's own routine.[1]

The pilot, directed by Benjamin Lehmann, was produced in January 2019.[4][5] Full production of the series took place in November and December 2019.[6] An EP with select songs from the show was released in September 2020. In December 2020, the first season was made available for purchase on Amazon.com, the iTunes Store, and other sites.

On March 29, 2021, it was announced that the series was renewed for a second season to premiere in the fall, boasting an updated look to the set.[7] Celebrity guests in the new season include Rohan Chand[8], Aidy Bryant[9], Amber Ruffin[10], and James Monroe Iglehart.[11] Production took place between March 22 and April 23.[6]

“Elmo has a new favorite game: he’s hosting a talk show, right from his living room. With Cookie Monster as a sidekick, other Sesame Street pals as backstage crew, and even a House Band, Elmo welcomes real-life performers to his couch to entertain kids and families with music, games, and fun for all ages. Jimmy Fallon stops by to show Elmo the hosting ropes, Lil Nas X shares a catchy song, John Mulaney gets competitive in a tricycle race, and much more—all before Elmo’s bedtime![12]”

Not-Too-Late Show cast and crew

While not working for the show, Big Bird and Zoe also appear in this series as show performers alongside guest artists. Alan and Mr. Johnson have also appeared playing non-staff miscellaneous roles in the show.
