Scarletpimpernel
PERFORMER Steve Whitmire
DEBUT 1981

That simple wimp, The Scarlet Pimpernel appeared in the special The Muppets Go to the Movies as an adversary of The Three Musketeers. The dreaded Pimpernel attempts to kidnap Cardinal D'Escargot. He is the one man in all of France who loves Humperdinck's lumpy pumpernickel crumpets beyond all things.

Origins[]

In actuality, while the Scarlet Pimpernel was a swashbuckling character, he had nothing to do with the Musketeers. While the latter served during the reign of Louis XVIII in the 1600s (written by Dumas in the 1800s), the Scarlet Pimpernel was created in 1905 by Baroness Orczy and his tales took place in the 1790s (during the Reign of Terror). He was actually Sir Percy Blakeney, an English baronet who pretends a foppish manner in public while in fact being the heroic Scarlet Pimpernel, rescuing French aristocrats from the guillotine (and thus setting a pattern followed by Zorro and others). The character's exploits have frequently been adapted to the stage, television, film, and radio.
