The Top Banana appeared in the Elmo's World episode "Bananas." The bespectacled fruit shows Elmo that he knows more about bananas than he thinks. His every utterance is accompanied by a comedy-style rimshot, followed by the banana's own "Thank you!"
The script notes that the character, with heavy framed glasses and loud bowtie, is based on comedian Phil Silvers, star of the Broadway musical Top Banana (the comedic fruit sings a snatch of the title song).
