Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was a Victorian novelist and poet. His best known works include Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Far from the Madding Crowd, The Return of the Native, and The Mayor of Casterbridge. They often criticized class and societal aspects of the Victorian age.

- Cookie Monster in Sesame Street Episode 1154 goes to the roof of 123 Sesame Street to "get far from the madding crowd." However, it's unclear if this was intended as a reference to Hardy or to Thomas Gray's poem "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" (which inspired Hardy's novel).
