  • Our article says that some Muppets saw Snuffy before his reveal in Episode 2096. I also seem to recall some vague scenes, but I can't remember what they are. Does anyone know of any?

The topic has become relevant in light of a scene in Episode 1779 where Bert sees him briefly, but questions if he imagined it. It's also of note that just the previous year, in Episode 1640, Ernie makes a point of the fact that he and Bert aren't grown-ups. It's a bit of a fun paradox that might be worth noting in a new Snuffy and Muppets section perhaps right after the Near Misses section.

    • Oscar I believe saw Snuffy early on, though. it could be faulty memory.

    • Oscar saw him in Episode 2058. Forgetful Jones also met him at least once (Episode 1836) only to forget it afterwards.

Also, how many "near misses" are we willing to collect? It happened in pretty much every episode he was in for over 10 years.

    • That's a good point. It's beginning to look like "Oscar outside of his can" where we originally thought it was far fewer cases. I'd be in favor of splitting it off to another article. It's at least more interesting than a bunch of screenshots of Oscar without a can.

    • I think I put in that part about some Muppets seeing him in the early days of the wiki (going by what I've heard other fans say), I wonder if that should only be important to note if they weren't convinced they were imagining him. Of course it seems there's been a number of instances of characters, human or Muppet, seeing him but becoming convinced he was imaginary. There's more than I thought in the past but I think that would still make for a much smaller list than Snuffy just barely being missed.

I think I started the near misses section (and never really thought it was fewer cases than what it turned out... I felt the same way about Oscar outside of his can), and I think I suggested making it a separate page at one point after we found more instances.

In terms of Muppets seeing Snuffy before, would it be a cheat to count Elmo in Episode 2096? He sees Snuffy before the adults do and is a big help in getting him to stay. And did the segment with Barkley following Snuffy in Central Park come before season 17?

    • Oh yeah, we have this thread!

Sandbox:Snuffleupagus sightings is a thing now!

    • I had added that Oscar's pet elephants saw Snuffy, but now I am wondering if pets/animals who don't talk should count.

I think Barkley saw Snuffy in Episode 1929, but I am unsure. The episode has Barkley sleeping on Snuffy's cape, and Big Bird helps get the cape off, I assumed  Barkley saw Snuffy before sleeping on it, but I guess he could have slept on it without seeing Snuffy (like, looking down, seeing the cape without looking up at Snuffy, and sleeping on it). Is he shown sleeping on it the whole time or do they show him awake and starting to sleep on it?

Aside from that, I know there's a segment where Barkley looks for Snuffy at Central Park and does see him at the end, did that come before or after season 17? I recall seeing it in some guides before but can't remember what episodes (so I don't know where to look to see if the wiki has a first for that sketch yet.... and we don't really have a guide for Snuffy or Barkley sketches to see a number).

    • Do you mean Episode 1829? Yeah, he's sleeping the whole time. So he could have just laid down and fallen asleep without seeing Snuffy.

    • I noticed that Toughpigs posted a season 3 photo of Grover meeting Snuffy. According to the Sandbox page, they meet in episode 0393. Should I post it there?

    • Okay, I just found that the first appearance of the sketch where Barkley looks for Snuffy at the park was Episode 1873 from season 15 (the page itself does not yet have info, but the first is noted in Episode 2269). So Barkley did see him before then. Should pets count?

    • Animals like Barkley and Fluffy don't really make sense to me; all the other examples are actual characters who react to this crazy thing they've seen. Those are far more interesting than, say, one of those butterflies on a stick seeing him prior to 1985.

    • Yeah, the animals wouldn't have to be persuaded or argued with or try to rationalize what they've seen. They just treat Snuffy as another critter.
