Truth or Consequences was an early game show which emphasized player participation over the actual game, originating on radio in 1940. Created and originally hosted by Ralph Edwards, the TV version began in 1950 in prime-time. A daytime version ran longest with Bob Barker as its host before taking over The Price is Right.
The show gave contestants seconds to answer a question (the truth half), and if failing, they had to perform often embarassing or physically discomforting stunts (the consequences), such as being blindfolded but told they were putting their hand into a container of squirming rats. Periodic more sentimental segments, reuniting the contestant unexpectedly with a relative or friend, led to Edwards' other long-running show, This Is Your Life.
