Uncle Wally was Bob's colorful uncle, who appeared on Sesame Street from season 15 (first visiting in Episode 1929) through season 23. Introduced as a traveling "thing salesman," Uncle Wally was initially an itinerant visitor to Sesame Street before settling down. He is an occasional teller of tall tales and dispenser of gags. On one occasion (in Episode 2014) he tries to convince everyone about the existence of his friend Mrs. Snortleoutagus; Big Bird (whose best friend was considered imaginary at the time) is the only one to believe him.

Before choosing a vocation, Uncle Wally had served in the merchant marines where he learned the song "S.S. Forgetful" (Episode 2130). He has also mentioned having jobs as a farmer (Episode 2213), a G and G railroad conductor (Episode 2454), and a radio repairman (Episode 2704).

He introduced Professor D. Rabbit and Garbo β€” two colorful characters he'd met in his travels β€” to his friends on Sesame Street, and later brought along his pet seal, Wolfgang, who remained on the street after his departure. He was also acquainted with Oscar the Grouch's childhood teacher, Miss Blechman.

In Magic on Sesame Street, he mentions having a brother named Filbert who was a magician.
