Kobus began his career in the 1990s on stage, in radio, and made his film debut in 1992's Ein Fall für TKKG - Drachenauge. He was a regular on the German sitcom Alles Atze (2004-2007) as policeman Viktor Schimanek, had a role in the Star Trek spoof (T)Raumschiff Surprise - Periode 1 (with Til Schweiger), and made appearances on Tatort (usually in episodes shot in Cologne) and Ein Fall für zwei. His first English language project was the 2005 TV movie Death Train (in a small role as a blind man), and the following year, he had a prominent role as SS officer Franken in Paul Verhoeven's film Black Book. More parts in international and English language films followed, playing henchman Vinny in Speed Racer, Nazi Colonel Pflueger in Spike Lee's Miracle at St. Anna (with Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and Berlin police chief Von Helldorf in Valkyrie (with Tom Cruise and Bill Nighy), about an aborted plot by German officers to assassinate Hitler. Kobus had played a different character in a previous 2004 German TV movie version of the same story, Stauffenberg (with Hardy Krüger Jr. and Udo Schenk as Hitler).
Other English language film credits include The Zookeeper's Wife (with Jessica Chastain), Terrence Malick's A Hidden Life, Collide (with Anthony Hopkins), The Magic Flute (with F. Murray Abraham), and Seneca (with John Malkovich). German film work continued including playing Viking chief Halvar in two live-action movie versions of the 1970s anime series Vicky the Viking.
