The Waldorf-Astoria Hotel is a luxury hotel in New York City. Named after and founded by millionaire William Waldorf Astor in 1893, the original hotel was demolished in 1929. The current version, at a different location, opened in 1931. The hotel was known for its opulence, rich and famous clientele, and for hosting gala events. Its chef Oscar Tschirky, known as Oscar of the Waldorf, invented the Waldorf salad at the original hotel location in 1896.
Jim Henson held the last two of his masquerade balls at the hotel, while the 2006 fundraiser Hollywood Meets Motown (with Kevin Clash and Elmo in attendance) also took place there.
